EMC Lab Upgrade
Established in 1979, EMC is the world’s leading supplier of intelligent enterprise storage and retrieval technology and designer of systems for mainframes, open systems and midrange environments. They are based in Hopkinton, MA with more than 100 sales offices and distribution centers world-wide, and a workforce of nearly 40,000 employees. To accommodate the growing number of employees and customers EMC is constantly building to expand and upgrade their facilities.
To expand their offices in an existing building and to create a new lab center, EMC required the existing HVAC infrastructure to be evaluated, upgraded and extended throughout the new office and lab areas. The Mechanical upgrade providing 1,350 tons of cooling for this 250,000 square foot lab facility had to be completed in phases in order to meet their needs and deadlines. The first phase of in this project was integrating the existing building infrastructure and upgrading the new lab area. MSI had to locate and install twenty-five (25) RC In-row coils in the lab area, and prefabricate roof hangers for the chilled water piping which would be located with the future mechanical equipment on the roof. EMC required the completion of the mechanical work in the lab area to be completed before the moratorium prohibiting personnel to be in the lab area for a period of ninety (90) days. MSI personnel would not be allowed in the lab area from April through to the end of July, 2008. This phase duration was December 2007 and April 2008.
During the second phase of the project MSI had to supply the chilled water piping cooling the lab with new RC In-row coils installed in phase one. During this phase of the project MSI furnished and installed all mechanical equipment in the second floor mechanical room as well as the HVAC equipment located on the roof. This phase duration was May to November 2008.
As the Mechanical Contractor on this project, MSI achieved the Owner’s goals with innovative design and quality craftsmanship while contending with a compressed schedule, strict security procedures, structural issues, and chiller warranty issues. With many difficult challenges encountered, MSI provided EMC with uninterrupted cooling throughout the project.
EMC demands a high level of customer service and quality with limited disruption to their mechanical infrastructure and critical building operations. Our team addressed the demands presented using teamwork and creative solutions to complete the project ahead of schedule, under budget and on time with 5,535 man hours and no loss time accidents.
